While the external cartridge dimensions are essentially the same The most important difference of the 223 & 556 is pressure. The 5.56 NATO round produces more pressure than the .223 Remington.
Note, while the 5.56 runs a bit higher pressure, any 223 rifle is going to be able to handle it, heck these same rifles are rechambered in 22-250 and have no problem and that is a LOT hotter.
